Memoirs Of A Vampire
By J. L. Young In 1839, I stood in a Hungarian salon and witnessed something extraordinary. The performer seduced me with his piano. He moved as though possessed by some unearthly being. His long hair threw sweat as he played. That was Franz Liszt. The doctors thought pneumonia took him. I hadn’t seen anyone as great as Franz for over a hundred years until Al Jolson hit his peak. I was there. Doctors said he died of a heart attack due to exhaustion. I knew it was dangerous to take so many in such a short time. it had to be done. So many great stars were born of this nebula and I have grown to be such a glutton. Hank Williams grew to stardom too fast. His heart wasn’t in it. Billie Holiday, oh sweet Billie. Pneumonia seems to be a common affliction among the stars. I had to change it up, lest they catch on. I was on that plane when Buddy Holly, Ritchey Valens, and the Big Bopper crashed in that field. I followed a budding musical genius when he was still an accompanist. I watched in the wings as he was hoisted into stardom. His effect on the public was utterly astounding. If it wasn’t for my action, Jimi Hendrix would have faded away in the light of so many other stars. The autopsy said he died of asphyxiation from a drug overdose. I was that drug. Janis Joplin suffered the same fate as Jimi. They didn’t even bother with an autopsy for Jim Morrison. Then there was Sid Vicious. They still had their youth, but I had my hunger. Don’t even ask about Elvis. He did that himself. Fame has taken more lives than I ever could. Though many great performers died during the 1980s and up until recently, I had no part in their untimely demises. I opened my studio to bring up and coming prodigious performers to me. I was to be the vortex. Before you place judgment upon me, look at what I have done for these great performers. I have made their names immortal. Call me a vampire. Call for my death. I have no regrets. I have tasted the lives of the greatest musical performers that have ever lived.
